Parental Rights Training for School Board Trustees

Learn about parental rights in Texas public education and satisfy the State Board of Education's required trustee training.   Senate Bill 204, passed by the 89th Texas Legislature, added Texas Education Code §11.159(b-2), requiring the State Board of Education (SBOE) to develop training for school board trustees on the rights of a parent regarding the education of the parent's child. In April 2026, the SBOE adopted the Parental Rights Training for School Board Trustees.   This online course, provided through TEA Learn, fulfills the statutory parental rights training requirement for Texas school board trustees. Participants will gain an understanding of the legal rights afforded to parents and the trustee's role in supporting and respecting those rights within the governance of public schools.   Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion through TEA Learn. School districts are responsible for maintaining verification of completion for each trustee.   Training Deadlines   Trustees who took the oath of office before January 1, 2026, must complete the training no later than September 1, 2026.   Newly elected or appointed trustees must complete the training within 120 calendar days of election or appointment.   For future election cycles, school board candidates may complete the training up to one year before being elected or appointed.
