Welcome to the Orientation and Mobility course!
This course was designed to aid administrators in understanding the role of the Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) and the unique challenges the COMS faces while performing the duties of their job in the school, the student’s home, and the community. With a thorough understanding of the role of the COMS, administrators should be better equipped to support the COMS in the course of their duties.
At the end of this course, learners will be able to:

- Identify the role of the Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) in evaluating students with visual impairments.
- Identify the roles and responsibilities of a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) in early childhood intervention (ECI) and within the school environment.
- Recognize the diversity of special needs within the population of visually impaired students and be able to identify the role of the COMS on the educational team in regards to those students.
- Compare and contrast the direct instruction and collaborative consultation models used by the COMS within the home, school and community environments.
- Identify solutions or alternative approaches to overcoming obstacles and barriers impacting the delivery of O&M service to students with visual impairments.
- Identify the role of the Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) in evaluating and instructing in the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC).
