Full course description

This course builds the knowledge and skills needed to develop appropriate, ambitious IEPs through compliant and high-quality PLAAFP statements. Participants will take a deeper look at the essential components of an effective PLAAFP and learn how a well-written PLAAFP serves as the foundation for data-driven IEP development.

Throughout the course, participants will examine federal and state requirements related to PLAAFP statements, learn how to incorporate meaningful impact statements, and identify and describe student strengths. The course also focuses on identifying areas of critical need by comparing grade-level expectations with a student's disability-related needs and recognizing potential barriers within the curriculum. Participants will learn how to document baseline data across academic and functional areas to support admission, review, and dismissal (ARD) committee decision making and the development of measurable annual goals. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to write comprehensive, data-driven PLAAFP statements that establish a strong foundation for effective IEP planning.

The intended audience for this course is special education teachers, related service providers, and any other professional staff responsible for drafting a student’s IEP, including the PLAAFP statement and measurable annual goals.
