Full course description

This course provides participants with the essential knowledge and skills needed to develop appropriately ambitious IEPs for students with disabilities. Participants will explore the foundational concepts of the SB IEP process, including how to align a student's strengths and areas of need with the enrolled grade-level general education curriculum. The course also examines the differences between accommodations and modifications and emphasizes the importance of using multiple sources of student data to inform educational decision making.

A major focus of the course is understanding and applying evaluation and assessment data, including information from the full and individual initial evaluation (FIIE), to support data-driven admission, review, and dismissal (ARD) committee decisions. Participants will learn about federal and state requirements governing IEP development, the role of grade-level curriculum in the SB IEP process, and the types of data used to develop present levels of academic achievement and functional performance (PLAAFP) statements and annual goals. By the end of the course, participants will be prepared to gather, analyze, and apply student data to support effective IEP development and planning.

The intended audience for this course is special education teachers, related service providers, and any other professional staff responsible for drafting a student’s IEP, including the PLAAFP statement and measurable annual goals.
