This course will discuss the importance of explicit instruction—whether in reading, writing, mathematics, or any other academic domain. We will learn about the components of the explicit instruction framework, see examples of each component in action, and reflect on our use of explicit instruction in our own work.

This course is designed for teachers, staff, and administrators of PK-12 schools, as well as ESC staff; however, all learners are welcome.

After engaging in this course, learners should be able to

  • Describe what explicit instruction is and why it is important
  • Explain how explicit instruction supports student learning
  • List the features of the explicit instruction framework
  • Describe the features of effective modeling and student practice
  • Identify features of explicit instruction in classroom examples
